Peninsula of Halifax

halifax

The Halifax Regional Municipality is an amalgamation of the City of Halifax, The City of Dartmouth, The Town of Bedford, and the surrounding County of Halifax.

Most of the City of Halifax is located on a peninsula almost entirely surrounded by water. There are only 6 major routes that access the Peninsula creating some traffic congestion during the morning and evening rush hours. However, compared to many large urban centers, Halifax has a fairly smooth traffic flow.

Halifax is the cultural and entertainment hub of the Halifax Regional Municipality, although most other areas have extensive shopping, dining, and entertainment facilities as well. Halifax is also the education capital of Atlantic Canada with 5 Universities and many colleges and technical schools.

Housing Types

halifax

Housing is very congested on the peninsula and all housing types can be found. Everything from traditional two stories, bungalows,  town homes, high rise Apartment Condominiums, 175 year old Victorian and Georgian Homes, and new contemporary homes.

North End: small 2 stories and bungalows dominate. A large explosion during World War 1 destroyed much of the north end and killed 2000 people and injured 9000 others. As a result, most of the homes are under 80 years old and there are many post WW2 Prefabricated bungalows.

West End: Mature neighborhoods with larger homes most under 80 years old. Well maintained properties, many fenced yards.

South End: Some of the oldest homes in metro, most of which have been renovated on many occasions. These houses can be very elegant and often have extensive grounds. As a result of the subdivision of many of the large estates that existed in this part of town, it is very possible to find newer homes as well.

Housing Prices:

Housing prices vary drastically depending upon which part of the peninsula you are looking for.

The North End ranging from $ 150,000 to $ 250,000
The West End ranging from $ 175,000 to $ 350,000
The South End starting at $ 275,000 and can range into the millions
